Stainless Steel Fabrication Winnipeg

Accufab Metalworks is known for providing superior stainless steel metal fabrication in Winnipeg to companies working in the transportation, aerospace and agriculture industries.

Stainless steels affords an impressive versatility that allows for a wide range of fabricating techniques. Although stainless steel has high work-hardening and strength rates, it’s also malleable enough to be welded, folded, bent, spun, machined or deep drawn.

Work hardening strengthens stainless steel through deformation. Exact rates of work hardening depends on the alloy grade of a piece of stainless steel. For example, austenitic steel has a slightly higher hardening rate than carbon steel. Commonly used in a fabrication process, austenitic steel is non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant and offers the benefits of formability.

We also match steel grades with the appropriate work hardening treatment. Austenitic stainless steel is hardened solely through a thermal process called “cold working.” This process is also applied to other stainless steel grades.

Martensitic and austenitic stainless steel benefit the most from a professionally completed work hardening application. Stainless steel that’s been cold drawn may achieve greater than 2000 MPa tensile properties. However, strength level of cold drawn steel is typically restricted to fine wire dimensions.

Rapid work hardening rates also improve the effectiveness of alloys in products requiring resistance to corrosion and high strength. In particular, the martensitic group of stainless steels offers the best hardness and corrosion-resistance levels needed in parts such as bearings, valves and tools.
